Note: IANA also lists other, unrelated entries for port 80 on a different protocol — 80/tcp — www: World Wide Web HTTP, 80/tcp — www-http: World Wide Web HTTP, 80/udp — www: World Wide Web HTTP, 80/udp — www-http: World Wide Web HTTP. This is not part of HTTP itself.

Note: IANA has formally registered HTTP on TCP/UDP/SCTP, but in real-world practice this service operates over TCP only — a formal registration on a transport doesn't guarantee the protocol is actually implemented or used over it. This page's Protocol field reflects genuine usage, not just the registry entry.

What port 80 is used for

Unencrypted web traffic. Increasingly used mainly to redirect to HTTPS (443) rather than to actually serve content, as browsers and search engines both push toward encrypted-by-default browsing.

Is port 80 encrypted?

Not encrypted — anything sent over plain HTTP, including form submissions, can be read or altered in transit. Modern browsers visibly flag plain-HTTP sites as "Not Secure."

Firewall & exposure considerations

Usually fine to expose publicly for a website, provided it immediately redirects to HTTPS rather than serving actual content unencrypted.
