PORT REFERENCE

Port 6379 — Redis TCP Port

Port 6379 is the default TCP port for Redis, the in-memory data store. Redis's own security documentation says access to its port should be denied to everybody but trusted clients, and that on a machine exposed to the internet the port should be firewalled, because failing to protect it can have a big security impact.

Note: IANA also lists other, unrelated entries for port 6379 on a different protocol — 6379/udp — Reserved. This is not part of Redis itself.

What port 6379 is used for

Default listener port for Redis, an in-memory key-value data store commonly used for caching, session storage, and message queues.

Is port 6379 encrypted?

No encryption or authentication is required by default in many Redis deployments — it was originally designed assuming a trusted network, an assumption that does not hold if the port is reachable from the internet.

Firewall & exposure considerations

Redis's own security documentation explicitly warns it is "designed to be accessed by trusted clients inside trusted environments" and should not be exposed to untrusted networks — a warning borne out by researchers repeatedly finding thousands of unauthenticated instances in internet-wide scans (see References below). Bind it to localhost or a private network only, and enable authentication even then.

Common questions about port 6379

Is Redis secure by default on port 6379?

Not by itself. Redis's security documentation says Redis is designed to be accessed by trusted clients inside trusted environments, and that exposing it directly to the internet is usually not a good idea. Since version 3.2.0 Redis also enters protected mode when it runs with the default configuration (binding all interfaces) and no password: it then replies only to queries from the loopback interface and answers other clients with an error, but an administrator can still disable protected mode or bind all the interfaces.

Which other ports does Redis use?

Redis Cluster adds a second port for node-to-node traffic, the cluster bus port, which by default is the data port plus 10000 (16379 when the data port is 6379) and must be reachable from the other cluster nodes. Redis Sentinel listens on TCP 26379 by default, and Redis's documentation says that port must be open to the other Sentinel instances. These ports are for the nodes themselves: Redis's security documentation says access to the Redis port should be denied to everybody but trusted clients in the network.
